KATE

I’ve had a paint brush in my hand since before I could talk. I do art because I love it. The process of creating art is as important to me as the final work. It is thought, expression, therapy. It is a sense of accomplishment, a skill to be honed, a canvas to make a statement. Art inspires. One idea opens a plethora of others. To be an artist is a privilege.

I am an artist and architect based out of Sydney, Australia. After living in New York and working at Soho House for five years I have returned home to pursue my love of art. My art is about my world. The artworks are an observation and expression of the colours, shapes and fractals in the world around me. They explore my home, the great Australian East Coast, as well as my adventures and experiences in New York City.

My father is a lady’s hairdresser, My mother, an art teacher. There were always creative projects being fostered as I grew up. Between myself and my three siblings, the dining room table was a cornucopia of papers, cardboard models, paints, canvas, disembowelled National Geographic magazines, fabric from old clothes, sculptural sticks from the backyard, you name it, everything was a treasure up for grabs in our creative escapades. It was here I discovered a unique way of seeing the world. It was here my imagination was let loose.

I have a Bachelor Degree and Masters of Architecture from the University of Newcastle, Australia. I’ve always felt a pull between art and architecture. Looking back, my art and architectural practice have undoubtedly influenced each other. Architecture has led me to some incredible places in terms of my education and career, but art became the vessel that freed me to understand and respond to these places.

My studio is wherever I can take my watercolour pad. At the beginning of this year, I returned to my creative roots, the family dining room table. Here, I have been creating a collection of works in anticipation of my first exhibition.

I’ve been so incredibly blessed to have met and worked alongside artists and creatives from all over the world. New York really is a melting pot. I can see a complexity in my art thinking that has come about because of the places I’ve been and people I have met. I am excited to continue developing and pushing my art practice. I cannot wait for what comes next!
